¿WHAT IS WIRELESS?

Wireless communication, or sometimes simply wireless, is the transfer of information or power between two or more points that are not connected by an electrical conductor. The most common wireless technologies use radio waves. MOTION DETECTOR WIRELESS MIAMI BEACH CORAL GABLES

With radio waves distances can be short, such as a few meters for Bluetooth or as far as millions of kilometers for deep-space radio communications. It encompasses various types of fixed, mobile, and portable applications, including two-way radios, cellular telephones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and wireless networking. Other examples of applications of radio wireless technology include GPS units, garage door openers, wireless computer mice, keyboards and headsets, headphones, radio receivers, satellite television, broadcast television and cordless telephones.

Somewhat less common methods of achieving wireless communications include the use of other electromagnetic wireless technologies, such as light, magnetic, or electric fields or the use of sound. The term wireless has been used twice in communications history, with slightly different meaning. It was initially used from about 1890 for the first radio transmitting and receiving technology, as in wireless telegraphy, until the new word radio replaced it around 1920. The term was revived in the 1980s and 1990s mainly to distinguish digital devices that communicate without wires, such as the examples listed in the previous paragraph, from those that require wires or cables. This became its primary usage in the 2000s, due to the advent of technologies such as LTE, LTE-Advanced, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

HOW WIRELESS MOTION DETECTOR WORK

Motion detectors are small electronic eyes that detect infrared waves—heat waves that radiate from moving objects. When the detector senses an object moving across its field of view—especially warmer objects such as people, animals and cars—it electronically turns on the lights.

The light stays on anywhere from 1 to 20 minutes, depending on how you preset the timer. Then the detector automatically shuts the light off unless it continues to sense movement. A photocell deactivates the light during daylight hours. A motion sensor light has a semicircular field of view of up to 240 degrees and a distance range, adjustable on most detectors, that extends to 70 ft. or more. Motion sensor lights will react to the movement of your dog, an approaching person, a passing car or sometimes even wind-blown leaves.

Nuisance “trips,” such as blowing leaves or a passing car, can fool the detector and turn the lights on when you don’t want them. These can be annoying to both you and your neighbors, and in fact, some homeowners won’t install motion detector lights for this reason.

However, you can solve most unwanted switching-on by adjusting the distance-range setting and by carefully aiming the sensor to limit its field of view. You can also narrow the field of view even more by applying tape to the sensor, as shown in Photo 7. If nuisance trips concern you, be sure to buy a light that has an adjustable distance/range setting, and an amiable detector unit as shown in Fig. A, Nos. 1 and 3.

Motion sensor lights allow you to operate the light in the conventional, manual way, usually by flipping the motion sensor light switch off for a second, then back on. This allows you to keep the light on at night when you want to, even when there’s no motion. By double flipping a second time, you return to automatic.

WHAT IS THE BEST WIRELESS MOTION DETECTOR?

Check out Honeywell’s great line of wireless motion detectors to see all of the wireless motions to choose from. It is hard to say which one is the “best” because the best motion for one situation may be the worst for another. Here are all five Honeywell wireless motion sensors with brief explanations of why they are the best for their specific application.

Sick and tired of false alarms? Can’t figure out if its your cat jumping off the stairs or the HVAC vent that keeps tripping your motion. The Honeywell 5898 DUAL TEC motion detector uses traditional passive infrared (PIR) and K-band microwave detection to reduce false alarms without compromising sensitivity. Both technologies must register motion in order to trip the alarm which reduces the chance of a false alarm. This dual technology makes this motion state-of-the-art and arguably the best wireless motion in the industry.

Looking for a reliable motion sensor that won’t break the bank and will prevent those annoying false alarms from your pets (up to 80 pounds)? Check out the Honeywell 5800PIR-RES pet immune, residential motion detector. This is a solid choice when evaluating a motion for price and effectiveness. This is arguably the most popular Honeywell wireless motion sensor and it is included comes with every LYNX Touch L5100PK security system kit.

Want to get a bit more out of your motion detector? The Honeywell 5800PIR has three separate programmable loops. The first loop (default loop) includes pet immunity up to 80 pounds and has a low sensitivity (pulse count 2). The second loop has a high sensitivity (pulse count 1) without pet immunity. The third loop is for an optional low temperature alarm which faults when the room temperature drops below 45° F for more than 10 minutes and restores when the temperature rises back above 48° F for 10 minutes. The temperature loop is programmed individually and will be seen as its own wireless zone.

With an operating temperature of -4° to 122 ° F and an IP54 weatherproof design, consider the Honeywell 5800PIR-OD. This outdoor motion detector is your best bet for protecting any exterior zone. The 5800PIR-OD has two separate passive infrared (PIR) sensors that detect motion independently in both zones.

Motion detection in a single zone will not trigger an alarm so that debris or small animals will not trigger false alarms. You can select a high and low sensitivity setting as well as a desired pulse count so you can customize your sensor to reduce troublesome false alarms.

Want to protect a long corridor or large open space? Although the Honeywell 5800PIR-COM is the only 5800 series motion that does not have built-in pet immunity, it is an excellent sensor for long range open spaces. If its 60 feet by 80 feet default detection range is not enough, simply use the included long range curtain lens which extends the range to 100 feet by 20 feet.

The 5800PIR-COM’s “look down” mirror allows you to mount the sensor above a door in a long hallway and without compromising motion detection from the doorway below. Just like the 5800PIR, the 5800PIR-COM has 3 different loops that offer the same features. MOTION DETECTOR WIRELESS MIAMI BEACH CORAL GABLES

Not only are Honeywell motion detectors best in class in the alarm industry, they are extremely simple to enroll and program into the popular L5100 Lynx Touch alarm panel. Check out Sterling’s Youtube on “How to learn the Honeywell 5800PIR-RES motion sensor to your L5100.” The best part about a wireless motion is not having to run a wire which allows you the flexibility of mounting them where you would like. Our top pick: Ring Floodlight Camera

Ring kicked things off with a video doorbell but recently expanded its offerings to include lots of other home security equipment. One new addition is the motion-activated HD floodlight camera.

This feature-loaded camera earned the top spot because it is quite a bit more advanced than similar products on the market. For example, the lights are 1,500 lumens each as opposed to a normal 60 watt incandescent bulb which is about 800 lumens. That means plenty of visibility when someone approaches your home. The Ring also comes with two-way audio and the ability to zoom in on a specific area or pan the camera for a wider view of the area. Plus, you can control all these advanced features from your smartphone or tablet. MOTION DETECTOR WIRELESS MIAMI BEACH CORAL GABLES

HOW TO INSTALL WIRELESS MOTION DETECTOR MIAMI BEACH CORAL GABLES

Motion detector lights are easy to install, but each brand has a few different details, so read the instructions. You’ll find the basic information printed on the outside of the box. Read the box before you buy the unit so you know what you’re getting. You’ll find more detailed instructions inside the box. MOTION DETECTOR WIRELESS MIAMI BEACH CORAL GABLES

Our step-by-step photos and tips from our experts provide a general guide of how to do the job. In most cases, you’ll simply replace an existing fixture with the new one, as our photos show. Make sure to turn off the power to the fixture at the main panel before removing it. MOTION DETECTOR WIRELESS MIAMI BEACH CORAL GABLES

However, if you have to run a new electrical line and install a switch, the job can get much more complex. Outdoor electrical lines must be encased in approved conduit and weatherproof electrical boxes. If you’re not familiar with conduit or the rules for running new electrical circuits, call in a licensed electrician. MOTION DETECTOR WIRELESS MIAMI BEACH CORAL GABLES

Working with old electrical boxes can be tricky too. Sometimes they don’t contain a ground wire (bare wire or one with green insulation) or other grounding means such as metal conduit. The National Electrical Code requires all electrical boxes and fixtures to be grounded. If you’re not sure yours is, check with your electrical inspector to determine if you have to run a new ground wire. MOTION DETECTOR WIRELESS MIAMI BEACH CORAL GABLES

ADDITIONAL INSTALLATION TIPS OF WIRELESS MOTION DETECTOR MIAMI BEACH CORAL GABLES

The cover of an outdoor electrical box must be waterproof. Seat the rubber gasket carefully. And if you are placing it against a rough surface, caulk it as well.

Moisture can seep into the detector and light sockets and ruin them. To prevent this, either locates the fixture under an eave or other protected area or buy one that has bulb seals and angle the bulbs downward so water can’t run into the socket.

Heat from the light bulb itself can confuse the detector. Keep the bulb and detector as far apart as possible. Adjust the field-of-view angle and set the distance range of your motion detector to avoid nuisance trips from normal passing traffic, animals, pools of water, air conditioners, heating vents and wind-blown trees and shrubs.

Get an electrical permit from your local department of inspections. Check for special local rules and have your work inspected when finished.

The computation table gives the method for calculating minimum box-size requirements. To do the calculation, count the number of wires coming into the box. However, some other things besides wires are counted as “wires” for computation purposes. For example, all the cable clamps used count for one wire, and we recommend always counting the fixture as two wires. Then multiply this total wire number by 2 cu. in. for 14-gauge wire (or 2.25 cu. in. for 12-gauge wire, even if there’s just one of the heavier wires in the box).

The computation method given here sometimes overestimates the minimum box size required by code, but it simplifies the calculation.
